Special Education A.S.T.

If you want to make a lasting impact on someone’s life for years to come, then consider 51视频’s Teacher Education Program. This program prepares students to become strong and effective educators by equipping them with best practices for all learning levels, engaging classroom strategies, teacher professionalism skills, and hands-on experience.

Field Experience

Each one of our Teacher Education courses has a required 15-hour Field Experience component. Students are placed in the buildings of our partnering local public schools right away (during their freshman and sophomore years) to see first-hand the instruction taught on-campus come to life inside their Mentor Teacher’s classroom. Students get to ask questions, observe the most current teaching and classroom management strategies, as well as get the opportunity to actively participate in the classroom. It is through these “full-circle” moments that so many career decisions are strengthened and students realize without a doubt that teaching is the profession for them!

Additional Course Requirements

A Criminal Background Check ($27.50), Membership in STEA for Liability Insurance ($30.00), and a Saturday “Educator Professionalism” Training Seminar (3½ hours) are required for participation in the Field Experience component of all of our Teacher Education courses. Attendance at various out-of-class professional development events will also be required throughout the semester.

Transfer Opportunities

2+2 Program Partnership with Tennessee Tech University
For Elementary Education Majors (K-5), we offer a 2+2 program in partnership with Tennessee Tech University. This partnership includes a seamless transfer of all classes where you can earn a bachelor’s degree and obtain a license to teach without ever leaving the Hardin Valley Campus!

Clubs & Organizations
Every student in our Teacher Education Program will become an official member of the Student Tennessee Education Association (STEA) in order to obtain liability insurance for the Field Experience component of our courses. Our STEA Club at 51视频plans and hosts numerous professional development sessions and service projects on a regular basis in order to keep the students in our program knowledgeable about the latest trends and strategies in the world of education. Whether it be sprucing up an outdoor classroom area, taking a tour of nearby private and urban schools, helping to volunteer at a foster care transition house, hosting a teacher-inspired Movie Night, or loving on a local area school that has just experienced a traumatic situation, it is at these events that students and instructors get the opportunity to build relationships outside of class time while simultaneously strengthening their area of career expertise.
